Why are we in Türkiye?
Concern began working in Türkiye in 2013 in response to the Syrian crisis. Since then, we have been implementing programs around basic needs, food security, livelihoods, education, protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to address the needs of Syrians in Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Kilis, and Hatay provinces.
Over 3.3 million refugees are currently living in Türkiye
For over 10 years, Concern has been working with the Turkish government at both the local and national level to deliver assistance for the refugee population through education, livelihoods, and protection programs. This work became even more critical in February 2023, after two devastating earthquakes centred near the city of Gaziantep. The disaster killed over 55,000 people and left millions homeless. Concern’s team in Türkiye, who themselves lost loved ones in the disaster, quickly mobilized and helped over 375,000 people with shelter, food, cash, clean water, sanitation, and psychological and legal support services.
More than one year on from these earthquakes, the recovery still continues for millions of people. Concern is continuing to support these recovery efforts to ensure that this once-in-a-lifetime shock doesn’t undo the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable people.
