Why are we in Burkina Faso?
Over the last decade, Burkina Faso has faced an increasing amount of political instability and regional conflict, leaving over 25% of the country in need of humanitarian assistance. Concern has been responding to this crisis since 2021, as well as the ongoing challenges of climate change and chronic hunger and malnutrition.
Over 25% of Burkinabè require humanitarian assistance
Burkina Faso’s current humanitarian crisis began in 2015 and has continued to expand with growing insecurity. Two coups in 2022 alone have left the country under military rule with a transitional government focused primarily on restoring security and allowing over 2 million Burkinabè who have been displaced by fighting to return to their homes. Across the country, 6.3 million people (approximately 27% of the population) require humanitarian assistance in 2024. This represents a 35% increase in humanitarian need compared to 2023.
This has also sparked a hunger crisis in Burkina Faso, with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) estimating that 3.8 million people will require food assistance this year. Further complicating matters is that 2024 marks the fourth consecutive year that the UN’s humanitarian response plan for the country has been significantly underfunded, with less than half of the target budget being met.
Latest achievements
Cash transfers
In 2023, Concern provided cash transfers to over 950 families, allowing them to meet their nutritional needs during both bouts of displacement and the lean season between harvests.
Healthcare
As part of a new project aimed at managing malnutrition in two districts, we’ve trained over 250 healthcare workers on managing acute malnutrition and feeding for infants and young children. These new skills are being put to use in over 50 healthcare facilities.
